LIBRARY ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS / NEW YEAR PERIOD

Out-of-term opening hours will operate between Friday 17th December, 2010 and Saturday 8th January, 2011. A daily schedule of opening hours covering the period 17th December to 8th January is available here. The Institute is due to close on Thursday 23rd December at 5.00pm, and will re-open on Tuesday 4th January.

Material borrowed from the General Collection between 11/12/10 and 23/12/10 will not be due for return until 10/01/11. Items borrowed from the Short Loan Collection between 16/12/10 and 07/01/11 will be due for return by 10/01/11.

Open Public hEalth November is an initiative from the publisher, Taylor & Francis which gives complete access to all current and back content of over 110 of their journals in Public Health & Social Care until 30th November. RIAN.ie PATHWAYS TO IRISH RESEARCH

RIAN.ie - is a single point of access to the contents of the Institutional Repositories of the seven Irish university libraries and DIT. It will be the primary source for Irish Open Access research publications and makes this research material more freely accessible. It is intended to extend the portal to other Irish research institutions as RIAN develops.

NEW US GOVERNMENT INFORMATION PORTAL

MetaLib contains fifty-three U.S. Government databases. It is a library portal providing users with an easy and personalized interface which can search simultaneously for information in a variety of electronic resources, such as catalogs, reference databases, digital repositories or subject-based Web gateways. STRUCTURAE: International Database and Gallery of Structures

This free website site offers you information on works of structural engineering, architecture or construction through time, history and from around the world. Documentation begins at the time of the pyramids in Egypt and Roman construction, continues to Romanesque and Gothic churches and through to the Industrial Revolution all the way to today and beyond. Structurae deals mostly with bridges, tunnels, dams, skyscrapers, stadiums, towers, etc. Access the Structurae website here.

REMINDER - EndNote Web CITATION SOFTWARE AVAILABLE @ I.T. CARLOW

EndNote Web is a web-based reference organizer and writing solution which enables users to manage references, cite references and create bibliographies in papers, essays, projects and dissertations. As references are stored online, it is possible for users to access their account from anywhere with internet access. EndNote Web also permits users to collaborate easily; sharing their EndNote Web folders with other EndNote Web users. NEW LIBRARY SECURITY SYSTEM

We have introduced a new RFID security system, based on radio-frequency tags. The new system should minimise the occurrence of false alarms and will allow for more efficient stock control. However, the main benefit is that it will enable us to offer self-service to our patrons. It is hoped to introduce this self-service element later this term.

Business Insights is a library of strategic management reports covering the following industries and areas of interest: consumer goods, energy, financial services, healthcare & pharmaceuticals, technology & ICT. The IT Carlow subscription includes an interactive reports function which provides for presentation-ready tables and graphics, language translations and report customisation. Please note that the Access Asia series is no longer available to us and has been replaced by the broader subject series above.

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS

Currently, the Library is open from 8.45 a.m.- 5.00 p.m. Monday - Friday. However, fulltime opening will commence from next week beginning Monday, 13th September. Therefore, library opening hours after that date will be:

Monday - Friday 8.45 am - 10.00 pm

Saturday 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.

Please check the 'Latest News' page to see any short-term amendments to this timetable. These will usually occur during out-of-term periods, Bank Holidays and other Public Holidays.

MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE ONLINE

Masters of Architecture is a collection of approx. 7000 digitised slides in jpg format which illustrates some of the works of famous architects. It is searchable by name or by building type or by keyword. The images may be downloaded for academic use, including printing, projecting etc.This collection is now available to IT Carlow patrons.

WOMEN & SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES - FREE ACCESS DURING MARCH

Women and Social Movements in the United States is a resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000, this collection seeks to advance scholarly debates and understanding about U.S. history generally at the same time that it makes the insights of women's history accessible to teachers and students at universities, colleges, and high schools. The collection currently includes 91 document projects and archives with more than 3,600 documents and 150,000 pages of additional full-text documents, and more than 2,060 primary authors. It also includes book, film, and website reviews, notes from the archives, and teaching tools. The Alexander Street Press have enabled free access to this resource to celebrate the month of March as Women's History Month.

THE IRELAND COLLECTION - FREE ONLINE RESOURCE FOR IT CARLOW USERS

The Ireland Collection developed in cooperation with Queen's University Belfast, is an online full text interdisciplinary collection of journals and other materials. It contains over 75 journals, 200 monographs and 2,500 manuscript pages. There is a strong emphasis on Irish history and archaeology, but also covers art, folklore, literature, mathematics, politics, sociology, science etc. Materials span from the 1780s to the present. The Ireland Collection was created with funding from the JISC Digitisation Programme and is being made freely available to publicly-funded institutions in Ireland. The Ireland Collection is included as part of IT Carlow's subscription to the JSTOR database. The available titles are listed here.

e-BOOKS FROM AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

APA e-books encompass book content in psychology and related disciplines, including sociology, education, medicine, psychiatry, nursing pharmacology, neuroscience, and physiology etc. Coverage within each collection is limited to scholarly and professional titles. IT Carlow has searchable full text access to books published in 2008 & 2009.

NEW RESOURCE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Pidgeon Digital is an online repository of illustrated talks which cover the areas of Architecture, Engineering and Design. Started in 1979 by Monica Pidgeon, the purpose of the series, which consists of over 200 illustrated talks, is to widen the horizons of students of architecture and design by giving them the opportunity to share the thinking of leading members of the profession worldwide. These presentations are sound files with time-coded illustrations. In some cases, there will seem to be quite a bit of audio to get through before the picture changes. Talks can be between 10-30 minutes in duration. It is possible to search the talks and the illustrations and to use the illustrations independently of the audio.

EMERALD SOCIAL SCIENCES E-BOOK SERIES COLLECTION

Our Emerald subscription has been expanded to include the Emerald Social Sciences eBook Series Collection. This complements and extends the current Emerald resource, adding more than 210 volumes from over 35 book series titles. The collection provides contemporary and high quality research, and contributes much to debate in the fields of politics, psychology, sociology, health care and education.

In addition, the coverage of all Emerald journals within our subscription, has been expanded to include all backfiles.Searches within Emerald automatically include all books and journals.

127+ YEARS OF 'SCIENCE' JOURNAL

Science Classic provides full-text PDF access to all issues of the journal 'Science' published between the first issue in July, 1880 and December 1996. This archive is now accessible to IT Carlow users. Content up to 2004 is available in the databases Academic Search Premier and Infotrac General Onefile. For articles since 2004, the printed journal is available in the Journal Archive and Current Journal Stacks.

HEA RENEWS FUNDING FOR ONLINE JOURNALS FOR THE IoT SECTOR

The HEA have renewed the funding of the IReL E-journals initiative for the IoT sector. This will allow access to be maintained to the EBSCO BSP/ASP collection of e-journals for 2010. Usage of the journals will be kept under review and a decision will be taken during 2010 whether to continue or expand the initiative. The available databases, which are searchable collectively or individually are:

Academic Search Premier - is the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for nearly 4,500 journals, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed titles. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for all 8,144 journals in the collection.

Business Source Premier - is a major business research database, providing full text for more than 2,300 journals, including full text for more than 1,100 peer-reviewed business publications. It is particularly strong in the areas of marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and economics. It provides full text (PDF) for more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922. Additional full text, non-journal content includes market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT analyses.

Regional Business News - provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications in the US. It incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. This database is updated on a daily basis.

UK/EIRE Reference Centre - combines British & Irish sources (magazines, newspapers, and reference books) with international sources to create a substantial collection of full-text research publications. In addition, the database provides thousands of illustrations, photos and maps.

REMINDER - Education Journals Online (New for 2010)

Education Journals - Taylor & Francis gives online full text access to over 150 journals in a wide variety of subjects within the area of Education including Contemporary Learning Developments, Early Years Education, Education Research, Further & Higher Education, History of Education, Sociology of Education, Special Needs & Educational Psychology and Teaching and Teacher Education. Coverage is from 1997 onwards. This site also allows the searching of all Taylor & Francis online publications. Access became available during December and will continue until at least to the end of the year.

MyiLibrary is an online platform for hosting e-books. The selection now available to IT Carlow has more than doubled with a wide variety of books on Early Childhood Education and Psychology now added. By creating an individual account, students can save searches, notes, and bookmarks.
