LIBRARY ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS / NEW YEAR PERIOD

Out-of-term opening hours will operate between Friday 18th December,2009 and Saturday 9th January,2010. A daily schedule of opening hours covering the period 18th December to 9th January is available here. The Institute is due to close on Wednesday 23rd December at 5.00pm, and will re-open on Monday 4th January.

Material borrowed from the General Collection between 12/12/08 and 04/01/09 will not be due for return until 11/01/09. Items borrowed from the Short Loan Collection between 17/12/08 and 08/01/09 will be due for return by 11.00am on 11/01/09.

Education Journals Online from Taylor & Francis

Education Journals - Taylor & Francis gives online full text access to over 150 journals in a wide variety of subjects within the area of Education including Contemporary Learning Developments, Early Years Education, Education Research, Further & Higher Education, History of Education, Sociology of Education, Special Needs & Educational Psychology and Teaching and Teacher Education. Coverage is from 1997 onwards. This site also allows the searching of all Taylor & Francis online publications.

MyiLibrary is an online platform for hosting e-books. The current selection has been expanded to include books on Social Care, Construction, Design, Statistics, Business & Accounting, AutoCAD and Electronics. By creating an individual account, students can save searches, notes, and bookmarks.

SOCIAL CARE e-BOOKS ON MyiLibrary

MyiLibrary is an online platform for hosting e-books. IT Carlow is piloting this service which makes some books that are on reading lists available over the internet on a 24/7 basis. The initial selection relates to Social Care, but it is hoped to expand the subject coverage over time. By creating an individual account, students can save searches, notes, and bookmarks. NOTE: If a re-login screen shows, click on the 'Refresh' button or Press F5.

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS

Currently, the Library is open from 8.45 a.m.- 5.00 p.m. Monday - Friday. However, fulltime opening will commence from next week beginning Monday, 14th September. Therefore, library opening hours after that date will be:

Monday - Friday 8.45 am - 10.00 pm

Saturday 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.

Please check the 'Latest News' page to see any short-term amendments to this timetable. These will usually occur during out-of-term periods, Bank Holidays and other Public Holidays.

In 2008, IT Carlow users downloaded 15,236 full-text articles from the ScienceDirect database. The journal, 'Manual Therapy' returns to the top slot, having had more than twice the usage of the second-placed title. The Top 10 journal titles, in order of popularity, were:

SAGE Publications are offering free access to SAGE Journals Online for the rest of the month. To avail of this offer, personal registration is required. A NEW LIBRARY ASSISTANT TAKES UP DUTY

Welcome to Nicola Bourke who takes up duty today as Library Assistant II. Nikki has previously worked in the library service of Wexford County Council. We also extend a 'Welcome Back' to Michelle Woods who has been covering a maternity leave vacancy in the Estates Dept. and who has returned to the library today.

This means that we have to say 'Goodbye' to the relief staff who filled in for the temporary vacancies. Thanks, therefore, to Jane Canavan and to Carmel Kennedy (both part-time) who finished up earlier this week and also to Linda Doyle who will be leaving us tomorrow after a sustained period as full-time library assistant.

JUSTIS DATABASE - NEW LOOK AND EXTENDED ARCHIVE OF IRISH REPORTS

Justis has been given a makeover and the new screens should make it easier to navigate through the database. In addition, the archive of Irish Reports has been extended by 81 years and now goes back to 1838. Printable PDF versions of all these reports are available across the entire date range.

Academic OneFile is the premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources. With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects, Academic OneFile is both authoritative and comprehensive. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. IT Carlow has been provided with extended trial access of this resource until the end of the year. This database is also available on the InfoTrac database menu.

FREE ACCESS TO ROYAL SOCIETY of CHEMISTRY JOURNAL ARTICLES

RSC Journals are freely available online during the month of March. This covers all content from the 20+ journals and other periodicals published by the Society between 1997 and the present day.Journals from the RSC are recognised as the fastest in the field, some papers being published within a day of receipt, including full peer review and editing.

HEA FUNDS 6000+ FULL TEXT ONLINE JOURNALS FOR THE IoT SECTOR

The HEA have commenced the introduction of the IReL E-journals initiative into the IoT sector. This initial investment will allow the provision of the EBSCO BSP/ASP collection of e-journals. Quoting from the HEA circular to each institute: "This collection has over 6,000 journal titles, ranging over all subject areas and therefore benefiting all disciplines across the IoT sector. The subscription will be for one year only and usage of the journals and cost effectiveness will be kept under review with a decision taken during 2009 whether to continue or expand the initiative" This suite of 4 databases, which are searchable collectively or individually are:

Academic Search Premier - is the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for nearly 4,500 journals, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed titles. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for all 8,144 journals in the collection.

Business Source Premier - is a major business research database, providing full text for more than 2,300 journals, including full text for more than 1,100 peer-reviewed business publications. It is particularly strong in the areas of marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and economics. It provides full text (PDF) for more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922. Additional full text, non-journal content includes market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT analyses.

Regional Business News - provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications in the US. It incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. This database is updated on a daily basis.

UK/EIRE Reference Centre - combines British & Irish sources (magazines, newspapers, and reference books) with international sources to create a substantial collection of full-text research publications. In addition, the database provides thousands of illustrations, photos and maps.

NEW DATABASE - INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS NEWS & ARCHIVE

Industrial Relations News (IRN) is a weekly Irish publication providing comprehensive coverage of all industrial and employee relations issues. Contents include: News, analysis and features on all current industrial/employee developments, Local and national pay bargaining, Labour law developments, Employment Appeals Tribunal and Equality Officer cases, Impact of EU Directives on industrial relations and employment law and Coverage of Labour Court and Labour Relations Commission (LRC) cases. IT Carlow subscribes to this online edition which gives access to all issues from 1997 onwards. Please contact library staff for username and password details.

NEW DATABASE - JSTOR ARTS & SCIENCES IV COLLECTION

JSTOR is an archive of academic journal back issues. Journals are always included from volume 1, issue 1 and include previous and related titles. However, the most recently published issues (past 3-5 years) are not available, but users may be able to search this recent material and link to the full text (depending on subscription status). Courtesy of the Lifelong Learning Centre, IT Carlow subscribes to the Arts & Sciences IV module. This module has a strong focus on the professions of business, education, and law, and also includes titles in psychology and public policy and administration. There are 112 titles in this collection. An A-Z of these titles is available here.

NEW DATABASE - WESTLAW.IE

Westlaw.IE from Thomson Round Hall is the most comprehensive and authoritative Irish online legal research service. It provides online access to an extensive collection of legal content including : a collection of case law including renowned reporting series such as ILRM and ILTR giving full text law reports dating back to 1867, consolidated legislation, annotated legislation, a unique collection of journals, relevant news and business information, and a current awareness service updated once a day. This subscription is being funded by the Lifelong Learning Centre.

It has been necessary to review our expenditure on journals and online databases. As a consequence, some subscriptions are not being renewed for 2009. FREE TRIAL - ROYAL SOCIETY DIGITAL ARCHIVE

Royal Society Digital Journal Archive incorporating all content from 1665 to 2006, is easily the most comprehensive archive in science and contains some of the most significant scientific papers ever published. Covering almost 350 years of scientific research across the disciplines, it now FREE to access until 1 February 2009.
