LIBRARY ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS / NEW YEAR PERIOD

Out-of-term opening hours will operate between Friday 19th December and Saturday 10th January. A daily schedule of opening hours covering the period 19th December to 10th January is available here. The Institute will close on Tuesday 23rd December at 5.00pm, and will re-open on Monday 5th January.

Material borrowed from the General Collection between 13/12/08 and 05/01/09 will not be due for return until 12/01/09. Items borrowed from the Short Loan Collection between 18/12/08 and 09/01/09 will be due for return by 11.00am on 12/01/09.

LexisNexis LNB Legal is the new platform for legal information from LexisNexis. This database includes UK & Irish Cases, UK Law Journals, International Legal Information, All England Law Reports, The Irish Reports etc.

LEXIS NEXIS COMPANY DOSSIER DATABASE

Our subscription to the LexisNexis News and Business Database has been upgraded to include Company Dossier. This additional database module enables users to gain insights into prospects, customers and competitors with instant access to up-to-date, trusted and comprehensive information on 3 million UK companies and 46 million companies worldwide. Dossier collates information from authoritative business, news, country, market research and industry sources and provides users with pre-formatted reports in an instant, targeted new business prospecting lists, and company, industry and executive profiles. SAGE Publications are offering free access to SAGE Journals Online for the rest of the month. To avail of this offer, personal registration is required. SAGE'S academic journals cover subject areas such as Childhood Studies, Communication & Media Studies, Counselling & Psychotherapy, Cultural Studies, Economics, Education, Engineering, Management & Organization Studies, Marketing, Materials Science, Science, Technology & Medicine, Social Policy, Social Work, Sociology, and Tourism Studies. Child Welfare Information Gateway promotes the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and families by connecting child welfare, adoption and related professionals as well as concerned citizens to timely, essential information. A service of the Children's Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it provide access to print and electronic publications, websites, and online databases covering a wide range of topics from prevention to permanency, including child welfare, child abuse and neglect, adoption, search and reunion, and much more.

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS

Currently, the Library is open from 8.45 a.m.- 5.00 p.m. Monday - Friday. However, fulltime opening will commence from week beginning Monday, 15th September. Therefore, library opening hours after that date will be:

Monday - Friday 8.45 am - 10.00 pm

Saturday 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.

Please check the 'Latest News' page to see any short-term amendments to this timetable. These will usually occur during out-of-term periods, Bank Holidays and other Public Holidays.

CONSTRUCTION WEB UPGRADED FOR 2008/2009

The Construction Web Site has been upgraded and expanded for 2008/2009. The site, hosted on the ITC intranet, contains lots of information on building construction, past and present. It is aimed at students and anyone else who is interested in building construction and building history. It concentrates on principles and practice; not on the details of Building Regulations or British Standards. Information has been gleaned from a variety of sources including manufacturers, specialist contractors, surveyors, building control officers, trade bodies, early text books and trade catalogues, museums and so on. The content includes hundreds of pages of text on all aspects of domestic building construction, over two thousand photos showing new and old construction practice, hundreds of 2D and 3D graphics, several PowerPoint presentations and lots of short video clips and multiple choice tests.

REMINDER - e-JOURNAL PORTAL

The e-journal portal ,Serials Solutions AMS, is an electronic journal management system which enables users to more easily identify and access journals that are available to them online. Journals can be identified using title keywords or can be browsed by title or subject. Over 17,000 e-journals are now available to the IT Carlow community via this portal.

REMINDER - EndNote Web CITATION SOFTWARE AVAILABLE @ I.T. CARLOW

EndNote Web is a web-based reference organizer and writing solution which enables users to manage references, cite references and create bibliographies in papers, essays, projects and dissertations. As references are stored online, it is possible for users to access their account from anywhere with internet access. EndNote Web also permits users to collaborate easily; sharing their EndNote Web folders with other EndNote Web users. Staff and students may sign up for a free account on the: Web of Science homepage or at: www.myendnoteweb.com

EndNote Web has become available as part of the library's subscription to the Web of Science database.

NextBio LIFE SCIENCES SEARCH ENGINE

NextBio is a life science search engine that enables researchers and clinicians to access and understand the world's life sciences information. NextBio searches through tens of thousands of study results with billions of data points spanning different experimental platforms, organisms and data types. NextBio also searches across millions of publications. Searching all publicly available data and literature in NextBio is free and personal registration gives additional benefits. However, access to all other data requires a subscription.

DATABASE ON POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS

PILOTS database is an electronic index to the worldwide literature on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health consequences of exposure to traumatic events. Such events include war, domestic violence, child abuse etc. It is produced by the United States National Center for PTSD, and is electronically available to the public. There is no charge for using the database, and no account or password is required. Links to articles are included, but access to full-text is dependent on subscription status.

NEW EDUCATIONAL EVIDENCE PORTAL

UK Educational Evidence Portal helps you find educational evidence from a range of reputable sources using a single search. It is designed for both professional and lay people interested in education. The portal is being developed continuously and new content added from time to time. The database of selected resources is currently limited in size but will become increasingly valuable as more resources are added.

SPORTS MEDICINE JOURNALS ONLINE

The library subscription to the SportDiscus database has expired. As an alternative, a number of full-text sports medicine journals are being made available via the Journals@OVID database. These are:

This database is an aggregate of hundreds of scientific, technical, and medical journals from over 50 publishers and societies. TWO FREE DATABASES FROM EBSCO PUBLISHING

GreenFILE is an index and database of information on environmental matters. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. The database contains nearly 300,000 records, full text for selected titles and searchable cited references for more than 200 titles.

Teacher Reference Center (TRC) is an index of over 260 titles from the most popular teacher and administrator trade journals, periodicals, and books is now also offered free via the EBSCOhost platform. The database provides coverage on key education topics such as Assessment, Continuing Education, Current Pedagogical Research, Curriculum Development, Instructional Media, Language Arts, Literacy Standards, Science & Mathematics, and more.

TELOS JOURNAL & ARCHIVE - FREE DURING 2008

TELOS and its archive of full-text articles from 1998 onwards is being made freely available during 2008.

PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT: "Marie Piccone, Publisher, is pleased to announce that the full text of TELOS is available online. Since 1968, the quarterly journal TELOS has provided an international forum for discussions of political, social, and cultural change. It has built a bridge between intellectual debates in Europe and the United States, exploring matters of contemporary concern to both sides of the Atlantic.

NEW JOURNAL - MEDIA, WAR & CONFLICT

Media, War & Conflict is described by the publisher, SAGE, as mapping "the shifting arena of war, conflict and terrorism in an intensively and extensively mediated age. It will explore cultural, political and technological transformations in media-military relations, journalistic practices, and new media, and their impact on policy, publics, and outcomes of warfare."

Media, War & Conflict is currently available to all on a free basis until 31 December 2008. It may have particular interest for students of Communications and PR.

NOTES AND QUERIES - HONEYNETS

"need a book about honeynet" was an online query received from an anonymous user on Wednesday. The library does not have any printed books on this topic, but the SAFARI database of 300 online computing books contains the title 'Honeypots: tracking hackers'. This book has a chapter on honeynets. The online book can be accessed via the library catalogue here.

A search for 'honeynets' in the SAFARI database will list 5 other books which may be of interest.

EDUCATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIGITAL LIBRARY

Ed/ITLib Digital Library is a valuable online resource of peer-reviewed and published international journal articles and proceedings papers on the latest research, developments, and applications related to all aspects of Educational Technology and E-Learning. Most articles are only available by subscription. However, searching of the 20,000+ articles is free and a significant proportion of them are open access.

SCIENCE DIRECT TOP 10 JOURNALS for 2007

In 2007, IT Carlow users downloaded 14,014 full-text articles from the ScienceDirect database. Somewhat surprisingly, the journal, 'Manual Therapy' which held the Number 1 slot for the previous three years, dropped to Number 5 in 2007. The Top 10 journal titles, in order of popularity, were:

DATABASE TRIALS

The library has arranged trials of a number of online databases:

The Henry Stewart Talks in Biomedical & Life Sciences is a collection of audio visual presentations comprising over 650 animated talks by leading world experts. Each of the seminars is specially commissioned in a user friendly format of animated slides with synchronized narration. The talks preserve each speakers' personality and approach allowing users to experience world class seminars at their own pace, wherever they want and as often as they want. The trial, which runs until March 15th, may be accessed from all on-campus computers at www.hstalks.com/trial

FAME - is a database that contains information for companies in the UK and Ireland. FAME contains information on 3.4 million companies, 2.6 million of which are in a detailed format. This trial, which runs until the end February, at least, may be accessed from all on-campus computers here

SPORTDiscus with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive source of full text for sports & sports medicine journals, providing full text for 415 journals indexed in SPORTDiscus. This authoritative file contains full text for many of the most used journals in the SPORTDiscus index - with no embargo. With full-text coverage dating back to 1985, SPORTDiscus with Full Text is the definitive research tool for all areas of sports & sports medicine literature.This trial, which runs until the end February, at least, may be accessed: here.

RECYCLING PAPER IN LRC

Following a request from students, paper recycling bins have been provided in the vicinity of the computer printers and photocopiers. The bins are easily identified, being blue in colour and having the recycling logo on the front. Students are requested to place only recyclable paper into these bins. All other waste should be placed in the metal litter bins.

FREE TRIAL OF ONLINE PHYSIOLOGY JOURNALS

Your Journals@OVID is a trial of the online content of the following physiology journals: Exercise & Sports Science Reviews, Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research. Click on the Your Journals @ OVID link.

Please note that during this trial, you may search the database and make a limited number of hard copies of your search output, but you may not copy a significant segment of the database to any electronic or other form or commercially exploit the database.

The trial also includes Journals@Ovid, a single database that contains every journal offered by Ovid. Users can search the Tables of Contents, Bibliographic citations, Abstracts, and references in the entire database. Full text is not available. Click on the Journals @ OVID link.

The trial runs until February 13th next and login/password details are available from library staff.
