LIBRARY ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS / NEW YEAR PERIOD

Out-of-term opening hours will operate between Friday 15th December and Saturday 8th January. A daily schedule of opening hours covering the period 11th December to 13th January is available here.

The Institute will close on Thursday 21st December (closing time still to be confirmed) and will re-open on Tuesday 2nd January.

Material borrowed from the General Collection between 09/12/06 and 01/01/07 will not be due for return until 08/01/07. Items borrowed from the Short Loan Collection between 15/12/06 and 05/01/07 will be due for return by 11.00am on 08/01/07.

BEST OF THE BEST BUSINESS WEBSITES

The 'Best of the Best' Business Web Sites is a project which was inaugurated by a sub-group of the American Library Association. Amongst the criteria used to evaluate the business websites were:

Currency of content

Stability of content over a long period of time

Quality & usefulness of content

Ease of navigation

SpringerLink is one of the world's leading interactive databases for high-quality journals, book series, books, reference works and the Online Archives Collection. Even though IT Carlow does not have a full-text subscription to this resource, it is still a powerful central access point for students, researchers and academics. It provides an index to, and abstracts of, most of the published output of Springer Science+Business Media Deutschland GmbH. SCHOOL OF BUSINESS & HUMANITIES POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH WORKING PAPERS REVIEW

The inaugural edition of this review was launched yesterday in the LRC. It contains six papers which showcase the variety and range of research that is being undertaken in the School of Business & Humanities in IT Carlow. Academic staff member Micheal O'Fearghail anticipates that this will become an annual publication. Anyone who wishes to have a free copy of the review may collect it at the main library desk.

Lexis-Nexis Irish Property provides access to full-text online legal information on Irish property law. ENFO INFORMATION LEAFLETS ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

The library has received an information display stand and associated literature from ENFO. ENFO is a public service which provides easy access to wide-ranging and authoritative information on the environment, incl. sustainable development. The stand is located beside the stairwell in the right-hand corner after the entrance to the library. All leaflets on this stand and on the ends of the adjacent bookstacks are available to take away.

A new scientific paper has been authored by IT Carlow staff and is available on ScienceDirect as an 'article-in-press, corrected proof'.

Investigation of substrate specificity of wildtype and mutant BphKLB400 (a glutathione S-transferase) from Burkholderia LB400 / Martina McGuinness, Claire Ivory, Niamh Gilmartin, and David N. Dowling

The article is be published in a future issue of International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation.

FREE ONLINE MEDICAL IMAGE DATABASE

MedPix(TM) is a free online Medical Image Database, provided by the Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Informatics, Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, MD. All public content is peer-reviewed by an Editorial Panel. This would appear to be a useful resource for Physiology and Health Science Studies. The database is now listed in the library catalogue and on the 'Free Databases' section of the library web pages.

SAGE Publications are offering free access to SAGE Journals Online, its online journal delivery platform via the HighWire Press online service. In addition, the library is now subscribing to The Irish Reports on Justis.com. This new database is specifically relevant to the B.A.(Hons.) in Legal Studies programme.

NEW OPEN ACCESS ONLINE CHEMISTRY SERVICE

ChemistryCentral is a new service publishing peer-reviewed open access research in chemistry, from the same team that created BioMed Central. The Chemistry Central website currently features chemistry-related articles published in BioMed Central journals. Chemistry Central is planning to launch further chemistry-specific journals in the near future, including Chemistry Central Journal, a new title covering all areas of chemistry.

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JOURNALS IN ACADEMIC ACCOUNTING

The October issue of the journal 'Accounting, Organizations and Society' (Volume 31, Issue 7, Pages 663-685) contains an article which summarizes the findings of other articles that have ranked academic accounting journals, as well as other articles that provide other bases for considering journal quality in this area. LIBRARY SUBSCRIBES TO LAW DATABASE

Justis Electronic Irish Reports and Digests provides online access to The Irish Reports and Irish Digests. This gives coverage of over 80 years of Irish case reports and contains the full text of published cases from 1919 to the present day. The data is updated every 3 months. The Irish Reports is the most comprehensive series of case reports covering decisions of major importance of the superior courts of Ireland. Irish Digests provides a summary for each case reported in: The Irish Reports, Irish Jurist Reports, Irish Law Journal, Irish Law Reports Monthly, Irish Law Times Reports, Northern Ireland Reports and Irish Special Reports. The Justis database is linked to the seperate JustCite legal reference search engine which provides a fully cross-referenced index to a comprehensive collection of authoritative Irish, UK and European legal information.

Users should note that in order for some links in this database to work properly, it may be necessary to hold down the 'Control' button while clicking on a link.This will be rectified in a future release.

ASABE Technical Library permits the searching of all recent technical documents published by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. This includes standards, journal articles, books and papers. Anyone can view the abstracts, but full text is only available to ASABE members.

DIRECTORY OF ACADEMIC OPEN ACCESS REPOSITORIES

As the Open Access movement gains momentum, there is a need for a dependable listing of the academic e-print research repositories that are available world-wide. OpenDOAR has been set up to provide this service. It is an authoritative directory of academic open access repositories which lists over 370 repositories and allows breakdown and selection by a variety of criteria. A search facility is also available.

ORGANISE YOUR ACADEMIC PAPERS WITH CiteULike

CiteULike is a free service to help academics to share, store, and organise the academic papers they are reading. When you see a paper on the web that interests you, you can click one button and have it added to your personal library. CiteULike automatically extracts the citation details. As it works from within the web browser there is no need to install any special software, it can be accessed from anywhere and details can be shared with other users.

ESRC Society Today provides access for teachers and students to constantly updated research resources on the economy, politics, the environment, wealth, education, health, crime and social issues. Although primarily UK-based, the website includes international fact sheets.Charts can be downloaded as PowerPoint slides. The website is produced by the UK Economic & Social Research Council. Personal registration, which is free, offers enhanced features.

JOURNAL of PHYSIOLOGY - FREE ARCHIVE FROM 1913

The Journal of Physiology has been added to the PubMed Central online archive. This digitization project is part of National Library of Medicine's (NLM) collaboration with the Wellcome Trust and the U.K. Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). The journal is also part of PubMed Central's back issue scanning project. As the project is ongoing there may be some gaps in the range of available issues/volumes. INSTITUTES of TECHNOLOGY BILL, 2006

The Bill which facilitates the designation of the Institutes of Technology and the Dublin Institute of Technology under the Higher Education Authority has recently been published. In effect it provides for an improved strategic framework for higher education through placing the Institutes of Technology under the remit of the Higher Education Authority. The Bill substantially amends the Regional Technical Colleges Acts 1992 to 2001 and the Dublin Institute of Technology Acts 1992 to 2001 and amends the Higher Education Authority Act (HEA Act) 1971. INTERVIEWS WITH SCIENTISTS & THINKERS AT PEOPLES ARCHIVE

Peoples Archive is an online video-on-demand archive dedicated to collecting for posterity the stories of some of the greatest thinkers, creators and achievers of our time. High-quality footage is shot on location in digital video format. The interviews are then broken down into individual stories, which are indexed and placed on the Peoples Archive site for viewing via the Internet, enabled by Apple QuickTime. The Archive is grouped into five sections: Science, Film, Literature, Masters and Medicine and currently there are 30 life stories presented. Access to the Peoples Archive is free, but personal registration offers enhanced features.

irishliteraryrevival.com is a new website where out-of-print and out-of-circulation Irish books are brought back into the world in online format. It represents for readers an opportunity to discover work they might never have encountered otherwise. The website is still in its infancy, but new authors are being added all the time. COPYRIGHT UPDATE

The Institute has signed an extension to its agreement with the Irish Copyright Licensing Agency. The main provision of this digital extension is that it permits the scanning of certain works published in Ireland (subject to limitations).In addition, the scanned material can be made available via the IT Carlow Intranet and/or printed onto paper. However the following is not permitted:

The posting of material to the Internet or World Wide Web.
The e-mailing of such material to any third party.
The reproduction of digital copies on CD, DVD, floppy disk, removable or other storage device.

The limitations which apply to paper copying also apply to digital copying.The ICLA Licence Extension only covers IT Carlow-owned materials which have been scanned by IT Carlow users. All other digital products available to IT Carlow users are subject to a licence specific to that individual product. Staff are advised to make themselves aware of the full provisions of this licence extension. A copy is available at the main library desk together with a listing of participating Irish Publishers.

Open J-Gate.com is an electronic gateway to global journal literature in the open access domain. It is also a database of journal literature, with links to full text at Publisher sites. Open J-Gate indexes 3000+ open access academic, research and industry journals of which 1500+ are peer-reviewed scholarly journals. NATIONAL INSTITUTE ECONOMIC REVIEW - CHILDCARE EDITION

The latest issue of National Institute Economic Review (Jan 2006) is a special edition which focuses on employment and the childcare and early years sector, presenting findings from research with an emphasis on social policy. The papers address two main aspects: the sector as an employer; and the role of childcare in enabling women to participate in the labour market. Although primarily UK based, there may be some relevance for Ireland. RESEARCH PAPERS IN ECONOMICS DATABASE

RePEc - Research Papers in Economics RePEc is a collaborative effort of hundreds of volunteers in 53 countries to enhance the dissemination of research in economics. The heart of the project is a decentralized database of working papers, articles and software components. All RePEc material is freely available. RePEc also provide links to many full text journal articles, but access to these may require a subscription or advance payment.

FREE JOURNAL BACKFILES FROM BLACKWELL PUBLISHING

Several leading journals from Blackwell Publishing provide free access to their online back files via the Blackwell Synergy Online service. Such content may be made available 6 months, 1 year, 2 years or more post-publication. The extent of back files that are available differ from journal to journal, but, nevertheless, constitute a significant archive of open-access peer-reviewed journal material. Of particular relevance to IT Carlow may be those titles on physiology, microbiology and genetics. Such relevant titles are now listed in the library catalogue and available to view here.

EMERALD TOP 10 JOURNALS for 2005

NEW PAPER PUBLISHED BY IT CARLOW STAFF

A new scientific paper has been authored by IT Carlow staff and is available on ScienceDirect as an 'article-in-press, uncorrected proof'.

Reconstitution of the enzyme AroA and its glyphosate tolerance by fragment complementation / Yi-Cheng Sun, Yan Li, Hai Zhang, Hai-Qin Yan, David N. Dowling and Yi-Ping Wang.

The article is be published in a future issue of FEBS Letters.

WALLPAPER MAGAZINE DESIGN AWARDS ISSUE

The current Wallpaper Magazine (February 2006) is their second annual Design Awards issue. It lists the "most intoxicating ideas, places, spaces and products" as adjudicated on by Norman Foster, Donna Karan, Mario Testino and others. Wallpaper Magazine is on open access in the Current Journals stacks at Shelf Number 745.2

FOR PARENTS OF RUGBY-PLAYING CHILDREN

The January isssue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine contains an article which may be of interest. The article is entitled

'Cervical spinal injury in children's community rugby football'

The article concludes that CSI is rarely catastrophic, but that continued efforts are required to educate players and referees to help prevent injury. IT Carlow users can access the full text of this article by clicking on the link above.

ERGONOMICS ABSTRACTS DATABASE ONLINE TRIAL

The library has been offered a trial for all IT Carlow users of Ergonomics Abstracts Database. Ergonomics Abstracts is a rich source of information not only on mainstream ergonomics, but also on related material from psychology, physiology, biomechanics, job design, human-computer interaction, safety science, human engineering, medicine, occupational health, sport and transport. Ergonomics Abstracts will be most useful to ergonomists, health and safety specialists, human factors engineers, human computer interaction specialists, designers, systems analysts, industrial engineers, occupational psychologists and occupational and physical therapists.

The trial is available from campus computers only until March 24th this year and library staff would welcome feedback on this resource. Access the database at:

NATIONAL FOOD RESIDUE DATABASE (NFDR)

NFDR - National Food Residue Database The NFRD contains data on chemical residues and contaminants in foods in Ireland. The data is taken from annual residue monitoring programmes and from individual residues studies and surveys. The scope of the data includes: veterinary drugs, prohibited substances, pesticides, heavy metals, dioxins and PCBs, mycotoxins, nitrates and PAHs.Access to this database is free.

CURRENT PROTOCOLS in MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

The publication 'Current Protocols in Molecular Biology' is now available in the library.

The CPMB is a 5-volume work which is updated every 3 months. It includes more than 1,000 procedures from hundreds of biologists at top laboratories around the globe. It offers basic methods for DNA preparation to advanced procedures for microarray analysis, chromatin assembly, and more. It also covers emerging areas, including Drosophila and C. elegans basic techniques, mouse phenotyping, chemical biology, DNA construction by recombination.

THANK YOU FOR ITEMS DONATED TO THE LIBRARY

During 2005, the library received 306 items as donations. A big 'THANK YOU' is due to academic staff who provided much of this material. The library is always happy to accept donations of up-to-date books and non-print materials that are relevant to courses currently taught in the Institute or that can contribute to the holistic development of the IT Carlow community. WARC.com is the World Advertising Research Centre online service which provides the largest single source of intelligence for the marketing, advertising, media and research communities worldwide, drawn from more than 30 international sources. This spans over 25, 000 articles, case studies, research reports and summaries, augmented with best practice papers, practical guides, daily news, email bulletins, statistical data and more.The library now subscribes to this online database.

IRISH HISTORY ONLINE

A new website Irish History Online offers a fully searchable database of publications on all aspects of Irish History, including the indexing of articles from local history journals. Over 45,000 items are currently available for searching, and this is being added to on a regular basis.

NEW YEAR - NEW / ENHANCED RESOURCES

Welcome back everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As the new term commences, the library is pleased to announce some positive changes which should benefit all library users.

Students can now borrow up to 3 items from the General Lending Collection.

Students can now borrow up to 2 items from the Short Loan Collection.

The loan period on books from the Short Loan Collection has been increased by 24 hours (ie material is now due back by 11.00 am on the second day following the day of loan)

Staff and Post-graduates may borrow up to 10 items at a time.

The use of Mobile Phones for voice calls is permitted in the enclosed stairwell areas of the LRC

The use of Mobile Phones for text messaging is permitted in the open access areas of the LRC (excluding areas designated as quiet areas).

All IT Carlow library users now have access to the World Advertising Research Centre Database at WARC.com

All IT Carlow library users will soon have access to an online library of 300 computing books, specially selected by IT Carlow academic staff. Please check back for news of availability or check for a link from our databases page.

DUKE UNIVERSITY PRESS JOURNALS - FREE ACCESS UNTIL MARCH 31st

Duke University Press has announced the launch of Duke University Press Journals ONLINE, its new online journal delivery platform hosted on HighWire Press. To mark the launch, the journals are currently available on a free trial basis until March 31, 2006. The available journals, many of which relate to cultural studies, include:

LIBRARY ARRANGEMENTS FOR NEW YEAR PERIOD

Out-of-term opening hours will operate between Friday 16th December and Saturday 7th January. A daily schedule of opening hours covering the period 12th December to 14th January is available here.

The Institute closes on Thursday 22nd December and re-opens on Tuesday 3rd January.

Material borrowed from the General Collection between 12/12/05 and 02/01/06 will not be due for return until 09/01/06. Items borrowed from the Short Loan Collection between 16/12/05 and 06/01/06 will be due for return by 11.00am on 09/01/06.
