Introduction

We have noticed a lot more activity in the LRC in the last few days as students knuckle down to assignments and project work. We hope that the new library catalogue and web pages will be of benefit to students and staff in opening up the library collections and enhancing online access to various resources.

A very useful starting point in looking for information about any topic is the INFOTRAC database. This currently contains almost 3 million articles and we would be hopeful that this access can be increased to 20 million articles for 2002. The database is available to campus users only at: http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/itc_web

An online tutorial in using the database is accessible at: http://www.umsl.edu/services/libteach/asap/start.htm

If additional information or assistance is required or if anyone wishes to have a tour of the Learning Resource Centre, please contact the Librarian or any of the library staff: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/contactl.html

MILLENNIUM Library System Update

The library catalogue (journals excepted) is now loaded on our new server and is available at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/search/

The circulation module which manages loans is also live. Students who have borrowed material in the last 10 days or so may now check their record to remind them what books they have on loan. Go to: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/patroninfo/

The student name and number from the Institute ID card must be input on screen. Students also have the facility to extend the loan period of their books. Click on the 'RENEW' buttons to extend the date by a week from that day. Please note that books from the Short Loan Collection or books that have been requested by other users may not have their due dates extended.

Staff loan information has now been transferred across to MILLENNIUM. As most of this information is a legacy from the old system, staff are requested to check their own record and to contact the Librarian if any anomalies are discovered. Go to: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/patroninfo/

Staff will need to know their library number. This can be obtained by contacting the library. Contact details are posted at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/contactl.html

Later this year and into 2002, further modules will be added to include Serials Control, Inter-Library Loans and Acquisitions. You will be kept informed of developments via this newsletter or via the news update page at

http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/latest.html

New LRC Resources - Induction Sessions

Over the past two weeks a number of induction sessions have been held to inform staff about the resources now available in the LRC. These sessions, which were arranged through the Heads of Department, were presented by the Computing Services Manager and the Librarian. In addition, some lecturers arranged for their classes to attend information sessions at which the new library catalogue and web pages were outlined to students.

Any staff who missed out on these presentations can contact the Librarian, who will arrange further induction sessions as required. In addition, any lecturer who wishes to have the new library catalogue and web pages outlined to students can also contact the Librarian Tel. Ext. 567.

MILLENNIUM Library System Update

The library catalogue (journals excepted) is now loaded on our new server and is available at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/search/

The circulation module which manages loans etc. goes live this week. Initially, most books will appear with the message 'Check Shelf'. As more and more users borrow material and as loan data is transferred from the old system, any item on loan will be indicated with a 'Due back date'.

Users will be able to view their own record at:

http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/patroninfo/

Staff who wish to avail of this facility will need to know their library number. This can be obtained from library staff. Contact details are posted at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/contactl.html

Later this year and into 2002, further modules will be added to include Serials Control, Inter-Library Loans and Acquisitions. You will be kept informed of developments via this newsletter or via the news update page at

http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/latest.html

Library staff have been adding listings of Special Collections to the library web pages. These include Publications on Education, Dissertations produced in the Institute, Science Projects, Environmental Publications etc. These listings can be found at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/specialc.html

Emerald Fulltext - enhanced access

A consortium of Institute of Technology Librarians have agreed a package with Emerald to provide web access to all of the 110+ journals in the Emerald Fulltext database. Although mainly business oriented, there are are many other subject areas covered. The publishers describe it thus:

". Users have instant access to over 35,000 full text articles from our international management portfolio, complete with full text archives back to 1994. Subject coverage spans a spectrum of management disciplines including: strategy; leadership; library and information management; marketing and human resource management; plus a substantial number of engineering, applied science and technology titles."

The database is now fully available to IT Carlow users at:

http://alidoro.emeraldinsight.com/vl=10836618/cl=33/nw=1/rpsv/cgi-bin/emeraldft?action=new

An A - Z listing of journal titles can be accessed at:

http://alidoro.emeraldinsight.com/vl=10836618/cl=33/nw=1/rpsv/cgi-bin/emeraldbr

A full listing of journal titles by subject can be viewed at:

http://alidoro.emeraldinsight.com/vl=10836618/cl=33/nw=1/rpsv/cgi-bin/emeraldbr?order=sub

A permanent link to the database has also been set up from the library web pages at:

http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/dbasenet.html

There are two features of the product which may be useful to academic staff. Firstly, it is permitted to use articles from the database in the compilation of course packs for students. Secondly, e-mail alerting to the contents of any new issues of the 110+ journals is available. It is possible for individuals to set this up themselves by going to: http://zaccaria.emeraldinsight.com/vl=69080887/cl=34/nw=1/rpsv/cgi-bin/alert.pl

Alternatively, the Librarian can do so on request. E-mail library@itcarlow.ie or make your request via the suggestions page at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/suggest/

As access to the entire list of journals is now available, the regular Emerald Journal of the Week feature from previous newsletters has been discontinued.

Science Direct on trial

Until the end of the month, this database of 1,200 scientific journals is available on trial. It is difficult and expensive to access scientific information in full text, but the publishers are interested in providing access to the Institute of Technology sector at competitive rates. Therefore, library staff would welcome feedback on the usefulness of the database. E-mail: library@itcarlow.ie or submit feedback via the suggestions page at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/suggest/

A description of the product follows:

"ScienceDirect® is the premier electronic information service for the interdisciplinary research needs of academic, corporate and educational institutions, offering comprehensive coverage of literature across all fields of science. Designed to serve needs of the researcher, ScienceDirect is the unsurpassed single source for scientific, technical and medical information on the Internet. Researchers can access a critical mass of the world's STM journal titles and full-text articles (today over 1.5 million articles), search the leading STM abstract and indexing databases (providing coverage of over 30 million records) and link out to articles from an array of STM publishers - all through a variety of platforms.
ScienceDirect offers access to the Elsevier Science journal collection (
over 1,200 titles), along with journals from a host of prestigious societies and STM publishers. The full text collection of over 1.5 million articles from 1995 to present covers a wide variety of subject areas and disciplines, including:

To access the database on campus go to: http://www.sciencedirect.com

Click on 'group-wide login'

While it is possible for individuals to create a personal login for this database, it is suggested that this would be of little value during the trial period.

Welcome

Welcome back everyone, and a special welcome to new students and staff who have come to IT Carlow for the first time. This is the first library newsletter of the new academic year and it is hoped to have a new edition produced each month during the year. Basic information about the library and the new library catalogue is now available at http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/

However, if you need additional information or assistance or if you wish to have a tour of the Learning Resource Centre, please contact the Librarian or any of the library staff: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/contactl.html

MILLENNIUM Library System Update

If you are reading this you will probably have discovered our new web-based library catalogue and information pages by now. If not, go to:

http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/

Although the system is not yet fully complete, we would appreciate any feedback you wish to give on the content of the pages or on the search menus and layout of the library catalogue. You may submit your suggestions from here http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/suggest/

At present, the library catalogue in the new MILLENNIUM system contains only 70% of the records from the old system. It is hoped to increase this to approx 95% in the next week to ten days. It is therefore advisable to continue to use the old catalogue in the library until library staff have indicated that the new catalogue is fully loaded.

Although searching the new library catalogue is reasonably straightforward, some tutorials are available at:

http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/webtutor.html

The Circulations module of the new system which contols loans etc. is due to go live soon after student registration has been completed. Until this occurs, all books in the MILLENNIUM catalogue will show as being in stock - indicated by the 'check shelf' message.

Later this year and into 2002, further modules will be added to include Serials Control, Inter-Library Loans and Acquisitions. You will be kept informed of developments via this newsletter or via the news update page at

http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/latest.html

IT Carlow Journal Subscriptions for 2002

Heads of Department will shortly be issued with listings of current journal subscriptions. If academic staff require any new subscriptions for 2002, these requirements should be discussed with the relevant Head. Our subscription agents will need to be informed before the end of September of any changes that are required.
