This information page explains the main facilities available to assist you during your studies in this college. Remember that library staff are here to help and if you encounter a problem, don't be afraid to request assistance.

The library is part of the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) building. The LRC has three floors and the facilities and services available on each floor are listed below:

BOOK RETURN BIN

A book return bin is available beside the main issue desk. It may be used to deposit books that are being returned to the library, especially if no other business needs to be transacted at the issue desk. Overdue books returned in this way are still subject to fines and any such fines will be added to the borrower's account.

 

CONSULTATION SERVICE

Apart from book lending facilities, the library staff provide an information service to all users. This can range from a room location query to assistance with finding information on any topic. Most information queries can be handled at the main issue desk, but in addition appointments can be made with any of the Liaison Librarians to discuss more extensive information finding queries. CURRENT JOURNALS

The library subscribes to over 150 journals and magazines covering all subject areas taught in the Institute. You will find that journals contain more up-to-date information than books. Some of the references you will be given in class will relate to specific articles in specific journals. A complete listing of journals is available in the library and will be included in the library catalogue in the near future. Current journals are displayed face out on Stack #17. Back issues for the current year are to be found underneath the angled display shelves and issues from previous years are shelved in the Journal Archive - Stacks #9 - 13. Please note that the journals are arranged in Dewey Decimal Classification order. This system is outlined below.

DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

Books and journals are arranged in a numerical sequence called the Dewey Decimal Classification system which starts at 001 and ends at 999. A general categorisation is as follows :

000 - 099 Generalities....................includes Encyclopedias, Computers, Programming

100 - 199 Philosophy,Psychology.................. includes Logic

200 - 299 Religion

300 - 399 Social Sciences..............includes Economics, Education, Commerce, Statistics, Law

INTER-LIBRARY LOAN SERVICE

An inter-library loan service is available for staff, post-grad researchers and 4th year students. This enables the delivery to the user of books and journal articles which are not held in the library. For this purpose, the library subscribes to the Trinity College Library Information Service and the British Library Document Supply Service. INTERNET ACCESS

The Internet is recognised as a major source of information on all topics. In the LRC, access is available from all computers. Library staff have identified and highlighted recommended websites relevant to courses taught at the Institute. These recommended websites are listed in the 'Resources Online' section of the library webpages and in the Subject Portals. http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/weblinks.html.

INTERNET DATABASES

In addition to databases that are freely available on the Internet, the library subscribes to other databases whose content is also delivered over the web. The majority of these databases are available from both on-campus computers and from off-campus. All databases can also be searched via the Summon search interface on the library catalogue home page or from http://itcarlow.summon.serialssolutions.com/advanced

ISSUE DESK

The issue desk is the main desk just inside the entrance to the Learning Resource Centre. During opening hours it is always staffed by library personnel. If you wish to borrow or to return library material or if you need information assistance, call to this desk.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE

Except for the current year, back issues of journals are shelved in the Journal Archive Stacks #10 - 14 on the Ground Floor. These are also arranged in Dewey Decimal Classification System order.

LOST PROPERTY IN THE LRC

Any personal items that are lost or mislaid are quite often handed in at the main issue desk on the ground floor. You should enquire there in the first instance. Items that have not been claimed after a few weeks are transferred to the Student's Union. All Student ID cards which are handed in are transferred to Admissions Office. Any money that has been found and which remains unclaimed is given to the Chaplain for the Student Assistance Fund.

LIBRARY CATALOGUE

The library computerised catalogue is a list of all the books in the library and it is available on the Internet. A link to it can be found in the library webpages at: www.library.itcarlow.ie. You can search for an item under various headings. If the book is in stock, the screen will show the exact shelf mark (E.G. 658. 81 is where books on International Marketing are to be found) and will indicate whether or not it is currently available. LIBRARY OFFICES

The library offices, workroom and storeroom are located directly behind and beyond the main issue desk just inside the entrance of the LRC. Access to this area is controlled by electronic keypad. If you wish to see a particular member of staff, please call to the main issue desk and make your request.

MAIN LENDING COLLECTION

The Main Lending Collection consists of which books which may be borrowed for up to one week at a time. These are shelved in Stacks # 0 - 8. Each student may have three items on loan simultaneously, but fines of 10c PER BOOK PER DAY will be charged on items not returned to the library by the due date. If a student accrues unpaid fines totalling EUR5.00, borrowing facilities will be withdrawn until the account has been cleared. Your student I.D. card is your library card and you must present it on each occasion that you wish to borrow library materials.

ONLINE JOURNALS

More and more publishers are making journal subscriptions available via the web. Access to over 19000 e-journal titles is available via the Institute's e-journal portal : http://nu6tz2wf4g.search.serialssolutions.com/.

PHOTOCOPYING

Four photocopying machines have been provided for student use. They are located to the right directly inside the entrance barrier. Three machines are operated by the student ID. An account associated with the ID can be charged up online via Blackboard to the required amount of credit for photocopying or printing . One machine can only be operated by a pre-purchased card which allows up to 30 A4 size copies to be made with each card. The pre-purchased cards are available from vending machines adjacent to the photocopiers at a cost of EUR2.10 each.

Students are advised that all copying is governed by the Copyright and Related Rights Act, 2000. Students should bear in mind that material copied is solely for individual research and private study. Please consult notices placed in the vicinity of the copiers for further information. PRINT-BASED RESOURCES

All the library's print collections are housed on the ground floor. These include books, journals, daily newspapers, company annual reports, official publications, standards, prospectuses for UK & Irish Colleges, dissertations and past examination papers.

REFERRAL SERVICE

The library provides a referral service for any staff or students who wish to access other academic libraries for the purposes of researching a particular topic. On receipt of a completed application form, library staff will issue a letter of referral which is valid for a specific date and specific library. This letter entitles the bearer to use the resources of the library being visited for reference purposes only. Further information and application forms are available from library staff at the main issue desk.

REFERENCE COLLECTION

The Reference Collection consists of books which may only be referred to in the library. They have been included in this collection by reason of their content, their cost, or their being part of a multi-volume set. These books may not be borrowed. They are located in Stacks #20 - 21. on the first floor.

REGULATIONS

The academic regulations governing the use of the library and other facilities in the LRC have been issued to each student and are contained in the Student Handbook. These regulations can be viewed online at: http://www.library.itcarlow.ie/screens/libinfo7.html. Your co-operation in adhering to these regulations will benefit all users of the LRC.

SELF ISSUE MACHINE

A self-issue machine is located near the main issue desk it can be used to loan, renew and return books, and to check your library record. Overdue books returned in this way are still subject to fines and any such fines will be added to the borrower's account.

SHORT LOAN COLLECTION

The Short Loan Collection consists of books which are in constant demand and the loan period is therefore restricted to over two nights or weekend loan only. These are shelved in Stack #9. Each student may only borrow two items at a time and fines of 1 EURO PER DAY will be charged on items not returned by the end of the second day following the day of loan. If a student accrues unpaid fines totalling EUR5.00, borrowing facilities will be withdrawn until the account has been cleared. Please note that items borrowed on Fridays are not due for return until the following Monday and items borrowed on the Friday of a Bank Holiday Weekend are not due for return until the following Tuesday. Your student I.D. card is your library card. You must present it on each occasion that you wish to borrow library materials.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

There is a large selection of other material to assist students in their courses of study. These include daily newspapers, company annual reports, official publications, and theses already produced by previous students. A selection of examination papers from the last three years is also available. None of this material can be borrowed and some of it is held behind the issue desk but library staff will make it available on request.

AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS

All non-print material is shelved in the Audio-visual stack #18 on Level Two. The equipment necessary to access this material has been installed on nearby desks.

 

TEACHING & LEARNING COLLECTION

The collection of material relating to Teaching and Learning is held in stacks #22 - 23 on Level Two.

VIDEOS AND DVDS

All material on video and dvd is shelved in the Audio-visual stacks #18 - 19 on Level Two. While it may be possible to borrow some of this material, TV/Video combination units are provided beside these stacks so that users may access the material on the premises.

ONLINE JOURNALS

COLLABORATIVE STUDY AREAS

Tables for collaborative study are provided on levels 2 and 3. The ground floor is reserved for indivudual study only.

HELP DESKS

Library or information enquiries can be made at either the main issue desk or the enquiry desk on the ground floor. Computer-related enquiries may be made at the Computer Services Department on the 3rd Floor.

INDIVIDUAL STUDY AREAS

The LRC has been designed so that the areas at the periphery of the building provide the quietest environment for study. The use of personal stereo is permitted, provided such use does not affect other users.

LIBRARY CATALOGUE

The library catalogue is available at any Internet enabled computer on campus. In addition a terminal has been reserved on each floor for quick searching. These terminals will have restricted functionality and will not allow wider access to hyperlinks or the web.

LIFTS

Lift access is provided to each level of the LRC from within the LRC.

NOTICEBOARDS

The library noticeboards should be checked regularly as they will keep you up-to-date with developments that happen in the library and they may also be used to notify you of the availability of material which you have requested. TOILETS

Male, Female and wheelchair accessible toilets are available on each floor of the LRC.
