Books


The library’s overall book stock exceeds 40,000 volumes.  Books are shelved in subject order according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system.  Each book in the Library is assigned a Dewey shelf number that appears on the spine of the book.  As Dewey is a numerical system, the books are arranged on the shelves in strict numerical order.  Books on the same subject are given the same shelf number.

The General Lending Collection consists of books which may be borrowed for up to one week at a time. These are shelved in Stacks # 0 - 8. Each student may have three items on loan simultaneously.


The Short Loan Collection consists of books which are in constant demand and the loan period is therefore restricted to two overnight or weekend loan only. These are shelved in Stack #9. Each student may  borrow two items at a time.


The Reference Collection consists of materials such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, newspapers etc.  Reference material is for library use only and is located on the first floor Stacks # 20 – 21.

Material in the Official Publications collection is for library use only.  This collection is located on the first floor of the LRC and contains material such as government reports, ESRI and NESC reports etc.

IT Carlow now subscribes to over 100,000 electronic books which are available over the internet. These can be accessed both on-campus and off-campus. Off-campus access requires login using name and student number. All e-books are also accessible via the Library website.
