Current journals are shelved in Stacks 17 on the ground floor beside the Reference collection. The most recent issue is shelved facing outwards and back issues are stored under the angled display shelf.

Journal Archive

Except for the current year, back issues of journals are shelved in the Journal Archive Stacks #9 - 13 on the Ground Floor. These are also arranged in Dewey Decimal Classification System order.

Journals may not be borrowed but articles maybe photocopied (subject to Copyright and Related Rights Act, 2000).

Some print journals allow online access as part of the subscription. The link for online access is incorporated into the library catalogue record for the particular journal title e.g.

E-JOURNALS

Apart from the print journals to which the library subscribes, there are over 17,000 journal, newspaper and magazine titles available in full-text to IT Carlow users via subscriptions to online databases. Off-campus access to these resources is also available to all staff and registered students of the Institute.

The library E-journal Portal is provided by Serials Solutions, an electronic resources management system. Serials Solutions allows the library user to search all the librarys electronic journals simultaneously. This search facility operates at journal title level only and not at article level.

Searching journals outside of IT Carlow subscriptions

Many journal publishers now provide free searching across all their journals.  Access, however, to the full-text of articles requires a subscription.  Nevertheless, the following multi-disciplinary online services may prove useful in identifying relevant articles, which may be available to you via the interlibrary loan system.

Directory of Open Access Journals ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		The Directory of Open Access Journals has the aim of increasing the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals, thereby promoting their increased usage and impact. The DOAJ aims to be comprehensive and cover all open access scientific and scholarly journals that use a quality control system to guarantee the content. In short, the DOAJ is a one-stop shop for users of open access journals.
InformaWorld ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		informaworldTM is a one-stop site hosting journals, eBooks, abstract databases and reference works published by Taylor & Francis, Routledge, Psychology Press and Informa Healthcare
IngentaConnect ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		Ingentaconnect offers searchable access to over 4.5 million articles from 13,500+ electronic publications. IT Carlow patrons can search this resource. However, full text access is only available for around 21 subscribed titles which include Design and Culture, The Design Journal, Enterprise Development & Microfinance, Nematology.
MetaPress ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		MetaPress is an innovative, controlled-access content-management service that formats publishers’ printed products for easy online viewing and provides a customized, branded host system to manage them.
Project Muse ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		Project MUSE is a leading provider of digital humanities and social sciences content; since 1995, its electronic journal collections have supported a wide array of research needs at academic, public, special, and school libraries worldwide. MUSE books and journals, from leading university presses and scholarly societies, are fully integrated for search and discovery.
SAGE Online Journals ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		SAGE'S academic journals cover subject areas such as Childhood Studies, Communication & Media Studies, Counselling & Psychotherapy, Cultural Studies, Design, Economics, Education, Engineering, Management & Organization Studies, Marketing, Materials Science, Science, Technology & Medicine, Social Policy, Social Work, Sociology, and Tourism Studies. Please note that IT Carlow does not have full-text access to SAGE Journals. Nevertheless, this is a useful resource for identifying material that may be of interest and from time to time SAGE makes some titles temporarily free to access. All issues of The American Journal of Sports Medicine are available to IT Carlow patrons on this platform.
SpringerLink ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		Springerlink is one of the world's leading interactive databases for high-quality journals, book series, books, reference works and the Online Archives Collection. Even though IT Carlow does not have a full-text subscription to this resource, it is still a powerful central access point for students, researchers and academics. It provides an index to, and abstracts of, most of the published output of Springer Science+Business Media Deutschland GmbH.
Social Science and Humanities Library (T&F) ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		For 2013, IT Carlow patrons can access this online collection of over 1000 journals. The major subject areas covered by the SSH library are: Arts & Humanities, Behavioral Science, Business, Management & Economics, Criminology & Law, Education, Planning, Urban & Environment, Media, Cultural & Communication Studies, Politics, International Relations & Area Studies, Public Health & Social Care, Sociology & Related Disciplines, Sport, Leisure & Tourism. Coverage is from 1997 onwards. This site also allows the searching of all Taylor & Francis online publications.
Wiley Online Library ACCESS THIS RESOURCE		Wiley Online Library hosts a broad multidisciplinary collection of online resources covering life, health and physical sciences, social science, and the humanities. While IT Carlow patrons can search over 4 million articles from 1500 journals, full text access is only available for around 25 subscribed or free titles which include Child Development, European Law Journal and a selection of business and science journals.
